Energy-Saving Melting and Revert Reduction Technology (E-SMARRT) is a
balanced portfolio of tasks to address energy-saving opportunities in the
metalcasting industry, including Improvements in Melting Efficiency;
Innovative Casting Processes for Yield Improvement/ Revert Reduction;
Instrumentation and Control Improvement; and Material Properties for
Casting or Tooling Design Improvement. This portfolio will
significantly reduce metalcasting process energy consumption while
improving important capabilities of castings.
E-SMARRT R&D tasks feature low-threshold energy efficiency
improvements that are attractive to the domestic industry because they do
not require major capital investment. Maximum energy savings from
both “as is” and emerging environments from these tasks is expected to
reduce metalcasting energy consumption by 14% over the course of 10 years.
The E-SMARRT
project provides unique access to the metalcasting industry.
Three association partners represent the majority of the
U.S.
metalcasting industry. E-SMARRT’s
researchers have close, long-standing relationships with “early
adopting” industry partners. E-SMARRT
will leverage the existing Cast Metal Coalition (CMC) to provide early and
broad deployment. This
research portfolio has been developed by
industry and presents an innovative project that addresses
requirements identified in the Metalcasting Vision 2002 and resulting
Technology Roadmap. |
